I just got my Takata replaced, and at the same time I had the dealer diagnose most of the stuff wrong with the truck. Heres the list

CEL - Fuel tank Evap system – new sending unit and vent valve

No cruise control - Brake pedal switch

Air bag light – impact sensor

No A/C – ac belt tensioner seized, belt snapped

Power steering leak – input shaft rusted, which rekt seal, replace power steering box

Rear brakes – rusted rotor rekt pads, replace rotors and pads

Rear windows dont work without fuckin with them - Rear window regulator/motors

rear doors fill with water - window seals?

Known problems:

TPMS – sensor is bad

Driver side mirror cracked

Bed badly dented

Vaugely impending issues

Sometimes wont shift out of 4wd – front axle actuator?

A pulley squeaks

Never had a problem with the engine or trans though.

REPEAT AFTER ME: A Chevy will run poorly longer than most cars will run at all.

Doors I’ve dealt with (few, admittedly) have drains that are litle more than holes punched in low spots. Movable windows allow some water through into the door cavity. Pull the door cards and remove any accumulated gunk. At the same time you can check on the window regulators.

I pulled the little rubber bumpers at the bottom of the doors, so now they dont fill with water

Airbag switch will save your life, brakes will also - sounds like jobs 1 and 2 to me.

I have a Chevy van that I bought for $200 just for 6L/4L80E. It’s got 260k miles, but has good compression in all cylinders. Nothing but the speedo works in the cluster, the interior is completely gone, and it’s got a sticky 1st to 2nd solenoid in the tranny. I have driven it daily for the past year and have done nothing but filters and oil. It’s got an exhaust leak and it idles rough sometimes. It’s never once hard started, stalled, or died. The electrical system is pretty fucked. When the headlights are on and you activate the blinkers, it makes both sides flash only in the front. I never drive it at night, so I have no interest in fixing that.

I do plan to remove the drivetrain at some point and scrap the rest. I actually like driving it around and have found it pretty useful to have. 3/4 ton cargo vans are pretty versatile. I think I might try to find one in better shape and have an LS Volvo 240 wagon on the side.

But it’s already running poorly at 10 years old.

In the unlikely event I had to buy a car, it’d be something with every airbag and safety feature known to man. Probably a Volvo. And it would have to be an automatic b/c wife ...
